Experience :
Run with the bulls. Pamplona is world famous for the festival of Saint Fermin, which takes place each year from the 6th to the 14th of July. During eight days, Pamplona changes from a city to one huge festival, with its major attraction, the running of the bulls in the streets of the city. The festival is also a great time to party with music and street performers who entertain the city.
The bull run consists of running along fenced off stretches of streets, in front of bulls. One can measure his courage and running speed to avoid being caught up by the bulls. The purpose of the bull run is to transfer the bulls from the Santo Domingo enclosure to the Bullring, which is where the bulls fight in the afternoon.
The race is run at 8am every morning, from the 7th to the 14th of July. Anyone can join the run, but runners must have entered the fenced area by 7.30am. A few minutes before the run, the runners ask for Saint Fermin’s trust. At eight o’clock sharp, a first rocket is fired, announcing the opening of the gates. The second rocket fired off means that all the bulls have left the enclosure and that they are coming your way… fast.
Conditions and restrictions :
The running of the bull is an extraordinary experience, for runners and spectators alike but it remains dangerous. Inexperienced runners should ask the locals what protective measures to take. The bull run requires good reflexes and to be in good physical shape. Under 18 are not allowed to run.
You should try to run a section of the bull run as you won’t be able to run the entire course.
For their own safety, runners must wear appropriate clothes and footwear.
Runners must not take things whilst running, such as rucksacks and cameras, which impede their ability to run.
