Course of the experience : storm chasing experience in America (6 Days)
Typical day :
§ Arrive the first day at the meeting point at 15h00 to meet the team.
§ Every day, depart the hotel at about 9:00 a.m. Then : discussing the forecast and target area. After identifying the best target area, we will drive to the zone, getting additional weather reports.
§ Lunch time en route. By 4 to 6 p.m., the aim is to be in the vicinity of the severe weather target area on chase days. We will chase the storm for as long as we can till it gets too dark or dangerous to keep chasing the tornado.
§ Because you may be in very rural areas for the afternoon and evening storm chases, we may not be able to stop for dinner until 9 p.m. or later. You may not arrive at your hotel until after 11 p.m. or later, if there is a good lightning show in our chase area. When there are no storms or on non-chase days, we should arrive at our motel around 5 to 7 p.m.
§ With the top tornado scientist in the world and his Doppler on Wheels *, you will help the scientists provide timely information to the National Weather Service to help prevent loss of life, injury and property damage due to severe storms !
* Doppler on Wheels, or DOW, is an x-band Doppler radar anchored to the bed of a flatbed truck. It is driven by chase crews to the nearest possible safe location to tornadoes, where it takes detailed vertical (RHI) and horizontal (PPI) readings.
You will see during this storm chasing experience :
§ Supercell-type thunderstorms capable of producing severe weather, including tornados.
§ Spectacular, explosive supercell thunderstorms and vivid night-time lightning shows.
§ Natural beauty of Tornado Alley filled with storm clouds exploding right before you.
At your disposal :
§ SUV's for comfortable travel (maximum 6 per SUV).
§ Three types of satellite systems to access weather information in the vans.
§ Two-way satellite broadband Internet for remote weather data access from any place in Tornado Alley.
§ State-of-the-art near real-time weather radar & lightning display system.
§ GPS satellite downlink navigation system, which allows the drivers to navigate on unfamiliar country roads.
§ Laptop computers to display weather information. A full compliment of weather software exists on each unit.
§ Ham radios 2m and 70cm for reporting severe weather to the National Weather Service and picking up weather radio and spotter network frequencies.
Itinerary :
You will travel as far as necessary to have the best chance for tornado viewing. Most likely, this area will cover Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, eastern Colorado, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, eastern Montana, eastern Wyoming, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota and other Midwestern states.

This storm chasing experience is enjoyed in small groups.
Conditions and restrictions :
§ This storm chasing experience is opened to everyone 12 years of age and older. A parent or guardian must accompany children 12 to 16 years old.
§ Things to bring : you should pack lightly in one soft duffle-type bag. A small bag for inside the van, a camcorder or camera. Bring only five days worth of clothing (hotels have coin-operated washers and dryers). Pack for arm to hot and humid weather. And, for brief cold weather periods, pack at least one pair of jeans and a long sleeve shirt.
§ Unfortunately, this experience is not suitable for disabled people.
In case of no severe weather : you will have a variety of things to do (going to amusement parks, Severe Storms Laboratory, Tornado Museum…
Hotel Accommodations :
We will always be in hotels that are in the path of the severe storms so we can see some good night-time lightning late into the evening. Occasionally, we will be required to stay in a smaller town with nice Mom and Pop motels so we can be in the path of the severe storm. You will be notified with the name and location of the base city hotel prior to arrival.
